What is the release schedule?
We know you want support for more countries and we are hard at work. Note that existing customers will receive all incremental country releases for FREE!
You can see a more detailed release schedule here.
To give you some history: When the app was first released in March 2010, we only supported wines of Italy. We added support for Spain in May; support for Chile and Argentina in July; support for the South of France and the USA in September; support for Australia, the Rhone Valley, Chablis, and Northern Burgundy in December.
How does the AG Wine app help me make a quick, dependable choice?
We understand that you don’t always have a lot of time to pick a wine, so we have made every effort to develop an application that will guide you through the process very quickly. Most important:
- All of the information is embedded in the application, so you never require wifi or internet connection (this is particularly valuable in many restaurants where the signal strength is suboptimal; it is also really helpful for travelers that do not want to have to spend money on an expensive data plan while abroad).
- Quickly view the AG Wine Editors’ picks. Highlighted grapes and regions are clearly marked with a our seal of recommendation, allowing you to easily scan a menu, compare it to our list and quickly choose a great bottle of wine. Grapes and regions are chosen as favorites for their overall consistency, quality, and price-value.
Although you can spend hours playing with this application, we feel very comfortable that anyone — novice or expert — should be able to use this application to select a wine comfortably in under a minute.
Does AG Wine rate individual bottles of wine?
AG Wine does not provide ratings for individual bottles of wine. In fact, the AG Wine app was specifically designed to allow anyone to make a well-informed choice without knowing the specific rating that a bottle was given by wine critic. To do so, AG Wine is focused on providing a wine selection strategy
Why eliminate reviews and individual bottle ratings?
Ratings on individual bottles of wine are valuable, but often not when you are trying to pick a bottle of wine at a restaurant or wine store. What happens when you are faced with a large wine list or don’t have an internet connection? Are you going to check the rating for each bottle (and hope that your application rates that specific bottle) or step away from the table to get a better signal? Probably not.
This is why we developed an approach to help you choose your next bottle of wine and give you the confidence to order without needing individual bottle ratings. By giving you detailed information on regions, grape varieties, appellations, and vintage ratings — coupled with our recommendations for those grapes and regions that offer the highest quality wines at the best price value — we believe that you should be able to make a very informed choice, without requiring a critic’s review.
Plus, since all of the information required to make a decision is resident in the application (no internet connection or wifi required), you can make a decision really quickly, allowing you to spend less time deciding and more time enjoying.
Am I going to see something on a wine list that is not covered by the app?
The AG Wine iPhone and iPad application includes a huge amount of information, with detailed profiled of the most frequently encountered grape varieties and appellations. Further, we have tested this application for a long time. While you might run into something that is not in the application, the odds are overwhelmingly in favor of most every wine on a list being covered by this app.
Will this app work on an iPod Touch or an iPad?
Yes, AG Wine works great on both iPod Touch and iPad. The app operates entirely offline, so no phone signal or wifi connection is required to access all of the app’s information. A version designed specifically for the iPad was released in mid-July.
What is an appellation?
Since wine lists and bottle labels do not always give you the name of the grape or grapes that compose a wine, we have added appellations (which often are used in lieu of the grape variety) to our listings to make it even easier for you to select a great wine. All listings in the AG Wine app that refer to appellations are followed DOC/DOCG (in Italy), DO (in Spain and Chile), AVA (in USA), and AOC (France). Appellations indicate wines made within a specific geographic area, from a specific grape or blend of grapes.
I do not know what an icon used in the application means – do you have a key?
All of the the icons and terminology used in the application are described on the “i” screens. Simply click on the
button located in the upper right hand side of the page where you encounter something you do not understand. However, here are what some frequently-encountered icons mean:
